Simply Skulls...

...Skallar, Czaszki, Crânes, Xρανία, Lubanje, Crânios, Cranii, черепа, 头骨, Teschi, खोपड़ी, Calaveras...

It's that skull and crossbones time of the year again, so, go and take to your closet and wear just about anything that has a skull! This is a trend that’s never going to die!

This iconic symbol has been used in fashion to add an edgy vibe to clothing. The skull is symbolic of danger, and even death, and can add just the right amount of darkness and mystery to anything.

In Mexico, smiling and dancing skulls are used to celebrate the Día de los Muertos, on November 1st and 2nd...people decorate the graves of their loved ones with drawings of skulls to evoke the spirits of the dead to hear the prayers of the living.

Since french pirate Emanuel Wynn was the first to use the skull-and-crossbones logo on his ship's flag...

...the skull is one of the most recognizable symbols of today’s contemporary visual culture. Adorning shirts, badges and rock memorabilia as the ultimate symbol of anarchy and rebellion, the image of the skull has found its way into the vocabulary of urban life.

To be or not to be? No question there. Skulls used to scare people but then came Vivienne Westwood and made an icon out of them while McQueen put a true fashion crown on their head.

"I think there is beauty in everything. What "normal" people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it." Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen

McQueen’s iconic usage of it lit the flame and started a worldwide trend that still is and will be popular for a long time to come.

And it’s not reserved only for the badasses of society. It fits perfectly any… style, no matter if you want to go for a chic feminine, a glam rock or a casual look.

Now, this trend is an acquired taste and not for the faint of heart…some might find it a tad creepy, but there is something mysterious and fascinatingly pretty about these skulls.

The key to getting this trend right is to remember that a skull is edgy (and a little dark), so be sure to contrast that with girlier, softer pieces.

To incorporate them into fashion without looking too goth or macabre, I think the key is to keep it sophisticated and only have one skull piece incorporated.

Whether they're used to accent otherwise feminine pieces, these skull-adorned bracelets, hair pins or necklaces are feminine and fun.

Skulls took over interior and graphic design, and over architecture and art.

But, how to use them in our houses without looking like we’re obsessed with death...well, take it with humor for instance, like this kick-ass pipe-smoking vintage skull scatter cushion...

...or this skull shaped speaker, perfect to re-exploring the "esoteric" aspects of Hi-Fi...hehe!

If you've been looking to add a bit of goth chic to your home, skulls are a great option.

Formerly an emblem of evil and mortality, the skull has been transformed into an avant-garde design element used in the most chic interiors.

The trick is to not over-use them,  making this scary accents look more obvious than ironic.

That said, I propose to you this trick...Can you find the hidden skull in the racks above?

Cool, right? and here's the scary and sweet treat...

Whether you celebrate all Hallow's eve, or the Día de los Muertos...go and take the skeletons out of your closet and wear just about anything that has a skull.. I feel it in my bones,  this is a trend that's never going to die!...(because it's to die for...hehe!)

Hope you have fun things planned, and be certain to eat too much candy and snuggle up with the ones you love!

Have a magical time everyone!
¡Les deseo a todos unos días mágicos!

Big hugs!
¡Grandes abrazos!

Inés

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said contrast is important. The clutch with the gold SKULL and the dainty dress is perfect.

  127. Impressive as always -especially the hidden skull on the shelves! :) I certainly appreciate the symbol's powerful statement, meaning and cultural interpretations, but in terms of aesthetics or when applied to fashion or deco, it doesn't say anything to me. Muchos besotes!
