"I have this mental sickness called creativity"

"Padezco esa enfermedad mental llamada creatividad"
Philippe Stark

Since childhood I wanted to be an architect. I took the usual road, endless hours playing with Lego, I enjoyed drawing, often sketched house plans, imaginary palaces, even airplanes, or completely implausible cities, reinterpretations of the spaces...

I have an adoration for many different types of design; from fashion to interior to architecture. I have been designing for so long I can’t look at something without thinking about its aesthetic qualities.

I can’t look at an object without analyzing it in some fashion.

I'd wonder why the designer made the decisions they made and how I would have done it differently.

Chanel Prestige Eyewear. Karl Lagerfeld
"Yes, and I can sit down on a white piece of paper and work because I don't
believe too much into inspiration, only I'm waiting for inspiration, work and
then inspiration may come. It's a little too easy to say that".
Karl Lagerfeld
I love design in almost everything. From sunglasses...
Me encanta el diseño en casi todo. Desde anteojos...

"To an engineer, good enough means perfect. With an artist, there´s no such
thing as perfect."
"Para un ingeniero, suficientemente bueno significa perfecto. Con un artista,
no existe algo perfecto"
Alexander Calder
...and everything in between.
...y todo lo que hay en medio.

In all mediums of design the process is essentially the same, there is a problem to be solved and the designer, artist, architect or engineer uses their skills to solve that problem.

Lounge Chair & Ottoman. Charles & Ray Eames.
The most successful designs go through this process many times, small problem by small problem, until finally there is an end result.

The Pierre House. Tom Kunding
This is what makes design feel like such an accomplishment, the ability to help people solve real problems.

When I imagine from scratch an object or a building and see it appear, is like witnessing the realization of a dream, the product from my (often delusional) imagination.

What about you? Were you lucky enough to choose the career you always wanted to pursue  or did you have to change your path on your way? If you could, would you change your decision now?

Although the real question should be: do you love what you do?

Big hugs!
¡Abrazos!

Inés

  1. Ines,

I love your creativity and it shows through your beautiful blog! I think women (in general) are creative beings with an amazing ability to think out of the box .. With lots if color! Men sometimes seem more black and white .. Kinda like the dog and the butterfly :)

  4. By reading your blog, I think it is so evident that you are incredibly creative. I'm pretty lucky that I really like what I do also. I truly think that if I didn't love my job and what I spend most of my days doing, then I would not be as happy in life as I am.

  20. So glad that you get to do what you love everyday. So many people grudgingly get up and go to a job they hate day after day just to pay the bills. I agree, the design process is very cool indeed! xo

  29. Wow...what a wonderful post! So honest and inspiring! Congrats on your achievements :) I've been through a deep self-discovering path...Well, it's still a work in progress. Finished Law School and a few years later, decided to study Communications, and I've been working in Advertising for the past 6 years. I've learned to appreciate how lucky I am for having the opportunity of trying different fields...Besos!

  30. Best post EVER, Ines! This resonates with me since I went to school for interior design and followed art for now. The other day I was talking about space planning tied with psychology with a friend, and it made me miss interior design. I am in LOVE with art, though. Who knows what I'll decide to do in ten years. I bet your designs are wonderful! :)

I've found that having a blog has been one of the best ways to explore different topics and look at everyday objects more creatively.
